Our first days here have been full of extremes.
The Highs
Despite our exhaustion from jet lag we have been on a bit of a high
our first few days here. We are so happy finally to be here and have
really enjoyed reconnecting with friends. It was awesome to sit in a
chapel with 800 Africans singing and praising the Lord. There are
several new expatriot missionary families that have moved here since
the last time we were here and we enjoyed getting to meet them at the
English Church service tonight and even got invited over for a meal
this evening, which was great.
The Drys
No water. Though, to our surprise, our permanent residence (the
apartment Jesse's grandparents used to live in) was outfitted with a
bed and working toilet when we arrived, there has been water only off
and on. Even when the water is on, it is only a trickle and
apparently the water pressure does not ever get stronger. More
figurative "drys" include basic overwhelmedness with the repairs
needed on the apartment, figuring out basics (like how much bleach to
use when rinsing vegetables) and the fact that Zach is having a really
hard time adjusting-- he panics when we are out of sight and wakes up
screaming many many many times in the night. Aside from this fitful
sleep he is also waking up at 3am thinking it is morning. It took us
about an hour to get him back to even fitful sleep last night. His
appetite has really decreased as well. I think all this is part of
normal adjustment-- I've read that it takes a day for every hour of
time difference to adjust, but please pray for our little boy as well
as for the rest of us-- everything seems harder when you're tired.
